Non-profit organizations have been working to develop evaluation capacity through the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving sponsored Building Evaluation Capacity (BEC) initiative. BEC was initiated fall 2006 and has involved 34 nonprofit organizations in three cohorts of trainee organizations. Each organization has achieved multiple outcomes including: enhanced knowledge about evaluation, enhanced skill to conduct evaluation and use evaluation findings, extension (ripple) of evaluation skills to other projects and personnel, and enhanced knowledge about evaluative thinking. All BEC organizations must complete a full evaluation project using their new skills. Results of three of the 12 organizations who participated 2012-13 are included below as examples of enhanced capacity. Each report was completed by staff from the organizations who designed their own projects, collected and analyzed data, summarized and shared their findings.
